Environment: Temperature, rain, emissions and projections

How much hotter India has become, and what comes next.

Heat, rain and the air are economic facts: they decide what a field yields, how many hours a labourer can work, how much power a city draws on a summer night. This guide reads India's climate from three instruments, kept apart: weather stations since 1901, a reanalysis since 1940, and the climate models that look ahead to 2100.

How far India's average temperature for the month sat from the average for the same month in 1991 to 2020. The month itself averaged 27.0°C across the country.

Last twelve months
+0.24°C
What the month says

August 2026 ran 0.63°C above the 1991-2020 average for August. In plain degrees, the month averaged 27.0°C across the country, and that departure ranks second among the 87 Augusts since 1940. Seven of the eight months of 2026 so far have come in above their own normal, and the year to date averages 0.45°C above it; the last twelve months as a whole average 0.24°C above. The annual cut runs only to 2025, where the year's mean anomaly sits at 0.07°C. One month settles nothing: August is a seasonal level that falls every year into the monsoon, so the comparison that carries meaning is with the same month in earlier years, and August 2025 sat 0.38°C lower.

What it does not say

August 2026 came in 0.63°C above the same month's 1991-2020 average. That baseline sits after decades of warming: the station record puts the century's change at 0.87°C, so a month at what passes for normal is not a month out of a cooler past. The national average also blurs the country, since states can move in opposite directions, days and nights by different amounts, dry heat and humid heat pressed into one number.

The level itself, 26.99°C, is seasonal, comparable with other Augusts and not with July. Recent months are revised as more observations enter the reanalysis, and the annual figure for 2025 sits at 24.23°C. We do not know from one month whether the year will end warm or cool.

How to read this

Read across for years, down for months. Blue cells were cooler than the 1991-2020 normal for that month, ochre cells warmer, white cells close to it. The baseline is itself recent: a white cell is a month as warm as the 1990s and 2000s, already warmer than the 1940s.

ERA5 is a reanalysis: a weather model run backwards over every observation available (stations, balloons, satellites), producing a complete, consistent picture of each day. It is not a thermometer reading, and its early decades rest on far fewer observations than its recent ones.

As of August 2026

August 2026 sat +0.63°C from its normal, the second warmest August in 87 years; the warmest was 2023. Of the 8 months of 2026 so far, 7 ran above normal.

What a hotter India feels like

ERA5, India's land, days a year

A national average of half a degree sounds like nothing. Nobody lives in an average. What people live through is the hottest afternoon, the night that does not cool, the muggy day when sweat stops working. Those have changed far more than the average.

In 1951-80, an average spot in India had 46 days a year when the night never fell below 26°C. In 1996-2025 it had 67 days. A night that stays at 26°C or more is a night a fan cannot fix, and a body that does not recover before the next day's work.

Humid heat rose faster still. Days with a wet-bulb temperature of 27°C or more, the reading of a wet thermometer cooled by evaporation and so the limit of how well sweat can cool a body, went from 3 days a year to 12 days. Days so hot and humid that the heat index passes 41°C, the band in which heat exhaustion becomes likely, went from 0.6 to 3.5.

The scorching dry days have not multiplied the same way. Days of 40°C or more averaged 21 days a year then and 20 days now, nationally. India's heat has become wetter and longer into the night, which is harder on bodies, on outdoor work and on power grids than a few more scorching afternoons would be.

Warm nights and humid days have multiplied; 40°C days have not

Each panel counts days in a year above a line that matters for the body. The count is for an average spot: the days above the line in every quarter-degree cell of India's land, averaged. A count of 12 can mean 12 days everywhere or 60 days across a fifth of the country, mostly the Gangetic plain and the coasts.

The panels share no common scale: each is drawn to its own range, so read the change within a panel, not the height across panels.

As of 2025

In 2025: nights of 26°C or more, 72 days; wet-bulb days of 27°C or more, 20 days; heat-index days of 41°C or more, 5 days; days of 40°C or more, 13 days. Every count was lower than in 2024; the humid counts stay far above their 1950s level.

03

How to read these numbers

Three instruments, never joined. The station record (CRU TS, from the University of East Anglia) interpolates thermometer and rain-gauge readings onto a half-degree grid and reaches back to 1901. The reanalysis (ERA5, from the European Copernicus service) runs a weather model over every available observation from 1940; the World Bank's portal aggregates it from 1950 and computes heat and rain indices from it. The projections (CMIP6) are about thirty climate models run forward under stated assumptions about emissions. They measure related things in different ways, so this guide shows them side by side and never splices one onto another.

Anomalies and baselines. An anomaly is a departure from an average for the same period: this August against the average August. The month on this page is measured against 1991-2020, Copernicus's standard. Long-run change is measured as the difference between two 30-year averages, 1951-80 and 1996-2025, inside one instrument. Thirty years is long enough to wash out most year-to-year swings.

Area averages. Every figure for India or a state is an average over its land, weighted by area, not by people. Delhi and the Thar desert count by their size. The World Bank's portal publishes 35 state and union territory units; its boundary set has none for Jammu and Kashmir or Ladakh. Its all-India temperature runs about 0.7°C warmer than the station record's own country average for the same grid, which is what leaving out those cold Himalayan territories would do; we do not know that for certain. Changes over time agree within a few hundredths of a degree, and this guide reports changes.

Projections are not forecasts. A projection says what the models expect if emissions follow a stated pathway: SSP1-2.6 is rapid cuts, SSP2-4.5 roughly today's policies, SSP3-7.0 a fractured world, SSP5-8.5 fossil-fuelled growth. The range shown is the spread across models (the 10th to 90th percentile), not a probability. Projections are drawn hollow and dashed and never joined to an observed line.

How to read this

Each line is one year's average temperature over India's land, minus that record's average for 1951-1980, so both start from the same zero. Year-to-year swings of half a degree are ordinary: El Niño years run hot, strong monsoons cool the summer. The signal is the drift underneath: flat for half a century, then climbing.

The warming rate is a straight line fitted through the years: the average change per decade over the period named, not a prediction.

As of 2025

The last ten years averaged 25.1°C in the station record, against 24.3°C in 1901-30. Warming ran at 0.07°C a decade over the whole record and 0.15°C since 1976; the reanalysis gives 0.15°C since 1976. The five warmest years in the station record, warmest first: 2009, 2010, 2024, 2016, 2017.

How to read this

For each month, the hollow dot is how much warmer its days have become, the blue dot how much warmer its nights. The monsoon months, June and July, warmed least: cloud and rain cap the heat. The dry season, from November to March, warmed most. A warmer winter shortens the cool spell wheat needs to fill its grain, which is why a hot February or March worries farmers more than a hot May.

As of 2025

Over the whole year, nights warmed by +0.6°C and days by +0.5°C. November warmed most (+0.9°C) and June least (+0.2°C).

Where the two dots sit close, the two instruments agree. Where they part, read the gap as uncertainty: the two records do not even agree on which regions warmed most. The station record, built from sparse gauges in hilly and remote states, leans on interpolation there; the reanalysis leans on its model. They also part in the irrigated north-west: canals and wet fields cool the afternoon there, aerosols from crop fires and traffic dim the sun, and the two records treat those effects differently. In Delhi the reanalysis finds days slightly cooler than in the 1950s and nights clearly warmer; the station record finds both warmer.

As of 2025

Largest changes in the station record: Lakshadweep (+0.9°C), Kerala (+0.9°C), Tamil Nadu (+0.9°C). Smallest: Jharkhand (+0.3°C), West Bengal (+0.3°C), Tripura (+0.3°C). Largest in the reanalysis: Sikkim (+1.3°C), Himachal Pradesh (+1.2°C), Mizoram (+1.0°C). Delhi: +0.6°C by the stations, +0.1°C by the reanalysis.

Two bars a state. The blue bar is how many more muggy days a year the state now has; the grey bar how many more (or fewer) scorching dry days. In the plains of the north, dry 40°C days have become fewer while wet-bulb days rose sharply: the heat did not leave, it took on water. Irrigation, which puts moisture into the air, is part of the reason.

As of 2025

The largest rises in humid days: West Bengal (+41.2), Bihar (+40.6), Uttar Pradesh (+31.6). Days of 40°C or more fell most in Punjab (−11.5 a year). In Delhi, humid days rose by 27.6 a year while 40°C days changed by −10.2.

How to read this

Each bar is one year's rain. About four-fifths of it falls from June to September. A bar far below the line is a drought year, and in an economy where much of the farmland still depends on rain, it shows up within months in farm incomes, rural wages and food prices.

As of 2025

Average annual rain: 1,133 mm in 1951-80, 1,138 mm in 1996-2025. June to September brought 78.1% of the year's rain in the recent period, against 78.4% before. The driest years on the record, driest first: 1918, 1972, 2002, 1920, 1965.

The season's shape has shifted only slightly: a little less in June, a little more in September

How to read this

The bars are the recent average for each month, the dots the old one. A shift in timing matters to a farmer even when the total does not move: a late June delays sowing, a wet September can flatten a ripe crop. Monthly averages over the whole country cannot show the onset date; the India Meteorological Department dates onset and withdrawal, and those dates are not in these sources. We do not know from this data whether the monsoon arrives later.

As of 2025

June: 160 mm then, 153 mm now. September: 174 mm then, 185 mm now. July and August, the core of the season: 291 and 264 mm then, 294 and 258 mm now.

Across India as a whole, rain extremes have barely moved; the change is local

How to read this

An extreme downpour falls on a district, not on a country. Averaged over all of India, a cloudburst in one valley is diluted by dry days everywhere else, so national averages of extremes move slowly even when local floods grow more frequent. This national average can neither confirm nor rule out more frequent local downpours.

As of 2025

Wettest five days: 125.7 mm on average in 1951-80, 127.8 mm in 1996-2025. Share of the year's rain on its wettest 1% of days: 17.4% then, 17.9% now. Longest dry spell: 69.9 days then, 69.0 days now.

What India emits

Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, to 2024

India is the third-largest emitter, and its emissions are still rising

How to read this

These are territorial emissions: the carbon dioxide released inside each country's borders, mostly by burning coal, oil and gas, and by making cement. They are estimated from fuel and production statistics, not measured in the air, and are revised each year as those statistics are revised.

As of 2024

India emitted 3,193 million tonnes, 8.3% of the world's, up 4.3% on the year and 5.5 times its 1990 level. China emitted 31.8% of the world total, the United States 12.7%. Coal alone produced 66.0% of India's CO₂.

Per person, India emits less than half the world average

How to read this

Divide a country's emissions by its people and the ranking turns over. India has as many people as China and four times as many as the United States, so its total is large while its share per person is small. A per-person average says nothing about how emissions split within India: a household with two air conditioners and a car emits many times what a household with one bulb does.

As of 2024

Per person: India 2.20 t, China 8.66 t, the United States 14.20 t, the world 4.73 t. An average American emits as much in about 57 days as an average Indian does in a year.

India's share of the warming so far is smaller than its share of today's emissions

How to read this

Carbon dioxide stays in the air for centuries, so warming follows the total ever emitted, not this year's flow. Countries that industrialised early carry a larger share of the stock than of today's emissions; India, a late emitter, the reverse. The warming share also counts methane and nitrous oxide and emissions from clearing land, estimated by Jones and colleagues.

As of 2024

India: 8.3% of the year's CO₂, 3.6% of all CO₂ since 1750, 4.8% of the warming. United States: 12.7%, 23.5% and 17.7%. China: 31.8%, 15.4% and 13.0%.

How to read this

Most of India's coal is burned in power stations, the rest in steel, cement and brick kilns. Oil goes mostly into transport and cooking gas; natural gas is a small fuel in India, unlike in the United States. Cement releases carbon dioxide twice: from the fuel that heats the kiln and from the limestone it bakes.

As of 2024

Coal 2,108 Mt, oil 747 Mt, cement 186 Mt, gas 149 Mt.

How to read this

Methane and nitrous oxide warm the air far more per tonne than carbon dioxide; they are converted to "CO₂-equivalent" tonnes so the gases can be added up. India's methane comes mostly from flooded rice paddies, cattle digesting fodder, and landfills; its nitrous oxide mostly from fertiliser on fields. These are farm emissions, tied to food and livelihoods, and much harder to cut than a coal plant's.

As of 2024

Methane 859 Mt and nitrous oxide 310 Mt of CO₂-equivalent, against 3,193 Mt of fossil CO₂. Measured by what India's own consumption causes, wherever it is produced, CO₂ was 2,543 Mt in 2023, against 3,063 Mt emitted inside India: India exports more embodied carbon than it imports.

How to read this

Primary energy is everything a country uses before conversion: coal into a power station, crude into a refinery. Electricity from wind, sun and water is counted as the fossil fuel it would have taken to generate it (the "substitution method"), so its share is comparable with coal's. Traditional biomass, still the cooking fuel of many rural homes, is left out of these figures.

As of 2024

Coal 56.6%, oil 26.9%, gas 6.2%, hydro 3.4%, solar 3.0%, wind 1.8%, nuclear 1.2%. Fossil fuels together: 89.7%.

How to read this

This is electricity generated, not capacity installed. A solar plant produces at full power only around midday on clear days, so its share of generation is much smaller than its share of capacity. For capacity month by month, see the renewable energy guide.

As of 2025

Coal 70.8%, solar 9.4%, hydro 8.5%, wind 5.0%, nuclear 2.6%, gas 2.3%. Each unit of electricity released 670 g of CO₂-equivalent in 2025, against 740 g in 2000. Electricity use per person: 1,422 kWh a year in 2025, against 540 kWh in 2000.

Each group is a 20-year window; within it, one hollow dot per emissions pathway. The pathways barely differ until the 2040s, because the warming of the next two decades is largely set by gases already emitted. After that the choice of pathway decides most of the outcome. A child born in 2026 is 14 to 33 years old in the 2040-2059 window and 54 to 73 in 2080-2099.

The baseline here is 1995-2014, the models' reference period, not 1951-1980. The models' change from 1995-2014 cannot be added to the observed change since 1951 to make one number: they are different instruments.

Highest: Himachal Pradesh (+1.7°C), Uttarakhand (+1.6°C), Sikkim (+1.5°C). Lowest: Andhra Pradesh (+0.9°C), Puducherry (+0.9°C), Tamil Nadu (+0.9°C). Under SSP5-8.5 by 2080-2099, Delhi's projected change is +4.5°C.

What a hotter day costs

Cooling, health and fire

A hotter day has three costs that can be counted, and several that these sources cannot. It raises the electricity needed to keep a room liveable. It raises the chance of dying, mostly for the old, the poor and outdoor workers. And it cuts the hours a person can work outside at full effort.

We do not know, from these sources, how many working hours heat already costs India, or how much it trims a wheat or rice harvest; those are research estimates built on the measures here, and they vary widely with method. What follows is what the sources do publish.

The heat a building must shed each year has risen 7% since 1951-80, and the models project far more

Cooling degree days at an average spot in India (each degree a day's average sits above 65°F, 18.3°C, summed over the year). Observed, ERA5, 1950 to 2025, solid; projected, CMIP6 median, 20-year windows, hollow.

How to read this

Cooling degree days measure the heat a building has to get rid of to stay at a comfortable temperature, and so track the work fans, coolers and air conditioners must do. They are the standard input to estimates of electricity demand for cooling.

As of 2025

Observed: 4,483 a year on average in 1951-80, 4,812 in 1996-2025. Projected from the models' 1995-2014 level of 4,875: 5,538 in 2040-2059 under SSP2-4.5, 7,324 by 2080-2099 under SSP5-8.5.

Under middling emissions, temperature-related deaths are projected to rise by about 11.4 per 100,000 people a year by the 2090s

Projected change in India's death rate from non-optimal temperatures, deaths per 100,000 people a year, against today, under RCP4.5 (a pathway close to SSP2-4.5).

How to read this

The figure is the change in deaths from heat and cold combined: warmer winters save some lives, hotter summers cost more. It is a projection from statistical links between temperature and deaths, observed across many countries, applied to India's projected climate and population. India's death registration does not record heat as a cause reliably enough to count these deaths directly.

As of Human Climate Horizons, 2024

Projected change: +5.1 per 100,000 a year by 2030, +6.0 by 2050 and +11.4 by 2090. On India's population of 2024, +6.0 per 100,000 would be about 0.9 lakh more deaths a year.

Most of the land that burns in India each year is farmland

Area burnt by land type, lakh hectares a year, 2002 to 2025, from satellite detection.

croplands, 2025

How to read this

A satellite sees a scorch mark, not its cause. In India, most burnt cropland is stubble set alight after the harvest, in Punjab and Haryana after rice in October and November, and across the plains before the summer crop. Its smoke adds to north India's winter haze. In the weekly satellite record, burning peaks in March and April and again in October and November.

As of 2025

Area burnt: 53.0 lakh hectares, of which croplands 32.8 lakh and forests 10.0 lakh.

What this measures

Temperature here is the air two metres above the ground, averaged over a day, a month or a year and over a country's or a state's land. Rain is what reaches the ground, in millimetres of water. The indices (hot days, warm nights, wet-bulb and heat-index days, dry spells, the wettest five days) are counted each day in each grid cell and then averaged over the area, so they describe an average place, not any one town.

Emissions are estimates built from fuel use, industrial output and land statistics, not measurements of the air. Carbon dioxide from fossil fuels is the best measured; methane and nitrous oxide from farms are less certain, and emissions from land-use change the least.

The guide reads every series the sources publish for India. The OWID datasets and the World Bank portal publish many more indices, aggregations and model runs than a page can draw: everything baked is downloadable below, and the full catalogue of what the sources publish, with what this guide did with each item, is in the repository's coverage ledgers.

How to misread these numbers

  • 1

"This month was normal, so the warming has paused."

The normal is 1991-2020, already about half a degree warmer than the 1950s. A month at the normal is a warm month by the standard of the last century. One month, or one year, is weather; the change shows in thirty-year averages.

  • 2

"Temperatures have fallen for three months running: it is cooling down."

India's average temperature falls every year from May into the monsoon, as cloud and rain arrive. A month's level can be compared only with the same month in other years. Watch the anomaly, the gap from that month's normal: it can rise while the thermometer falls.

  • 3

"India has warmed by less than a degree, which no one can feel."

The average hides the extremes people live through. Nights of 26°C or more and humid days above a wet-bulb of 27°C have multiplied, and those are what tire a body, cut work hours and push up power demand.

  • 4

    "Delhi has not warmed."

One record finds Delhi's afternoons little changed since the 1950s; both records find its nights clearly warmer and its humid days far more frequent. Irrigation and haze cool the afternoon and add moisture; the heat moves into the night and into the humidity.

  • 5

"India is the third-largest polluter, so it is one of the main causes of climate change."

India emits the third-largest share of the world's carbon dioxide today, but warming follows everything emitted since the 1750s, and India's share of that is a fraction of the United States' or China's. Per person, India emits less than half the world average.

  • 6

"The models say India will be 4°C hotter."

Only under the highest-emission pathway, by the end of the century, and as the median of a wide model range. Under lower pathways the projected warming is half that or less. Projections describe consequences of choices, not a forecast.

  • 7

    "The monsoon is failing."

The national total shows no long decline over 125 years, and its timing has shifted only slightly. What has changed is how rain is spread: some regions are drier, others wetter, and heavy downpours are a local story that national averages blur.

Sources, method and revisions

Sources of record

Temperature, rain and climate indices: the World Bank Climate Change Knowledge Portal (CCKP), which aggregates CRU TS 4.10 (Climatic Research Unit, University of East Anglia), Copernicus ERA5 (ECMWF) and the CMIP6 model ensemble to India and its states. Monthly temperature, precipitation, wildfires, emissions, energy and heat-death projections: Our World in Data, with Copernicus, the Global Carbon Project, Jones et al., the Energy Institute, Ember, GWIS and the Climate Impact Lab as the underlying producers, under CC BY 4.0. Data vintage 2026-09-11.

Method

Values are as published. Changes are differences between two 30-year averages computed within one instrument; warming rates are least-squares lines through annual values. The century plate subtracts each record's own 1951-1980 average. CCKP's fill code for a missing value is left empty. Nothing is estimated, interpolated or spliced.

Revisions and breaks

Station, reanalysis and model records are separate instruments and never joined. OWID's annual figure for the current, unfinished year is not shown. CCKP's simplified wet-bulb globe temperature series are not used: for 2024 and 2025 they carry corrupt values. The projected wet-bulb series, and one CMIP6 percentile series that CCKP serves on the wrong side of its own median, are withheld as source defects.

This guide

Version 1.0, October 2026. The monthly reading is revised as OWID publishes each ERA5 month; the long records when CCKP adds a year; emissions when the Global Carbon Project publishes its annual budget.
