Built for the curious, not the credentialed.
India produces some of the world's richest economic data and publishes it in some of the world's least readable forms. India Atlas exists to close that gap.
The problem
A citizen who wants to know "how fast are prices rising, really?" currently faces a trek through badly designed government portals, scanned PDFs, and press releases written for wire services. Even seasoned observers struggle to assemble a clean series, let alone interpret it. The data is public; the understanding is gated.
Dashboards have not fixed this. A wall of charts without explanation is just a faster way to be confused. What is missing is the middle layer: patient, well-designed interpretation that treats the reader as intelligent but not expert.
The artifact
India Atlas is not a dashboard and not a news site. Its unit of publication is the guide: a whole page devoted to one statistical subject: the consumer price index, the national accounts, jobs, household spending, bank credit, college enrolment, the family health survey, the monsoon and the heat. Each guide combines carefully designed charts of every related series, evergreen explanation of what the measure means, dated commentary on the latest print, and an explicit guide to the ways the number is most often misread.
Guides are revised with each new data release but are built to last: closer to a continuously updated reference work than to journalism. Read how we handle sources, revisions and uncertainty in our method.
The reader
We write for curious non-specialists: students, journalists on a deadline, citizens trying to verify a claim, founders watching input costs, civil servants outside the statistical service. We assume intelligence and zero training. Every unusual term is explained where it is used; every chart teaches you how to read it.
If you are an economist, you are welcome too: the register tables, downloadable data and vintage discipline are built for you. But the prose will never pretend you are the only audience.
Colophon
India Atlas is a static website: no trackers, no cookies, no accounts, no app. Pages are plain HTML built with Astro; charts are drawn with Observable Plot and download as SVG, PNG or CSV. Data is fetched from the statistical agencies by a scheduled pipeline, checked, committed, and baked into the page when the site is built. The text is set in Source Serif 4 and Golos Text, self-hosted.
