How many of us, and how old.
India last counted its people in 2011. Every figure since is an estimate, and every figure for the years ahead is a projection. The United Nations makes both, and the World Bank republishes them. This guide shows what they say about how many Indians there are, how old they are, and where they live.
The current reading
–The UN's estimate of everyone living in India on 1 July of its latest estimate year, –. It counts residents, whatever their citizenship. It is a model built on the 2011 census and the surveys since, not a head count.
On 1 July 2023 the UN estimates India's population at 1.4 billion, 0.9% more than a year earlier. Births were about 23.2 million and deaths about 9.5 million, leaving a natural increase of 13.7 million. Migration ran the other way: more people left the country than arrived. Indians aged 65 and over were 6.9% of the population.
A woman had 2.0 children on average, below the 2.1 that replaces a generation, and that rate has fallen for 59 straight years, since 1964. The median Indian was 28.1 years old. A baby born in 2023 could expect to live 72.0 years.
The 2023 figure is the UN's model, not a count, but it is the best comparable figure we have. India has not taken a census since 2011, so the estimate is built from that census, from sample registration of births and deaths, and from surveys. The next census will revise it, and the UN re-estimates the whole history every two years. India's own official figures can differ because they count differently. A national total of about 143.8 crore hides states that are still adding people quickly and states that are barely adding any. We do not know the number to the nearest crore.
The long curve
Population, 1950 to 2100India's population is projected to peak around 1.7 billion, then shrink
The solid line is the UN's reconstruction of the past, from censuses (the last in 2011), the Sample Registration System and household surveys. The dashed line is a projection: what happens if fertility, death rates and migration follow the UN's central assumptions. The shaded bands show how uncertain that is. The wider band is the range the UN's model gives a 95% chance of containing the true figure.
A projection is not a forecast of policy or a target. It mostly follows from people already born: the women who will be mothers in 2045 are alive today.
India had – people in 1950 and is now – as large. The medium projection reaches – in 2050 and peaks at – in –, falling to – by 2100. The 95% range for 2100 runs from – to –: the far future is genuinely unknown.
How old is India
Age and sex, median ageThe base of the pyramid has stopped widening
Each bar is one five-year age group. A country with many births and early deaths draws a triangle: wide at the bottom, narrow at the top. As births slow and people live longer, the bottom stops growing and the middle and top fill out. Where the marigold tick sits beyond a bar, that group is projected to be larger in 2050; where it sits inside, smaller.
The median age splits the population in two: half are younger, half older. It tells you whether a country's typical person is a schoolchild, a young worker or a parent of grown children.
The median Indian is – years old, and will be – in 2050 on the medium projection. The largest five-year group today is aged –; in 2050 it is projected to be –. Children under 15 are – of the population, against – in 1950.
India got younger until the 1970s, and has been ageing since
When child deaths fall before births do, a country first gets younger: more babies survive. That happened in India until the 1970s. Once families have fewer children, the median age climbs steadily.
The median age was lowest, – years, in –. On the medium projection it reaches – by 2100: half of all Indians would then be older than that.
The working-age window
Ages 15 to 64, and the people they supportThe working-age share is projected to peak in the mid-2030s
Economists call the years when the working-age share rises a "demographic dividend": more earners for every mouth to feed. Fifteen to 64 is a convention, not a fact about Indian lives. Many 15-year-olds are in school, many 64-year-olds still work a field, and the share counts people of working age, not people with work.
The dividend is a window, not a payment. It pays only if those of working age find jobs; the jobs guide shows how many do.
People aged 15 to 64 are – of Indians. The share is projected to peak at – in –. Their number keeps rising for longer, from – today to a projected – in –, because the population itself is still growing.
Fewer children to support now; more old people later
A dependency ratio counts people too young or too old to be expected to earn, for every 100 who are of working age. Children cost school fees and food; older people cost medicine and care, and in India most of that care is given by their own families, not by pensions.
For every 100 people of working age there are – children and – people aged 65 or more. The older group is projected to outnumber children, per working-age person, from –. People aged 65 and over are – of Indians today and a projected – in 2050, when there will be – of them for every 100 of working age.
Fewer children
Fertility, births and deathsAn Indian woman now has fewer than two children on average
The fertility rate is a snapshot of this year's behaviour, not a count of any real woman's children. Replacement is a little above two because some children die young and slightly more boys than girls are born. Below it, each generation is smaller than the one before, though the population keeps growing for decades while the large generations born earlier have their own children.
The national figure hides wide differences between states. The NFHS guide has India's own survey measure; the gender guide has the Sample Registration System series.
At – children per woman in 1950 and – now, fertility fell below replacement in –. The UN's medium projection has it at – by 2100.
Births peaked at the turn of the century; deaths are rising as India ages
The gap between the two lines is the population's natural growth. Deaths rise even as health improves, simply because there are more old people. When the lines cross, the population shrinks unless more people arrive than leave.
Fewer births is already visible in classrooms: fewer children enter school each year, which frees room for spending per child, or closes village schools.
Births peaked at – in –. In the latest estimate year there were – births and – deaths. On the medium projection deaths overtake births in –.
Longer lives
Life expectancy and child deathsIndians live three decades longer than in 1950, women longer than men
Life expectancy at birth is the average lifespan a baby would have if this year's death rates held for its whole life. It is pulled down hard by deaths in infancy, which is why most of its rise since 1950 came from children surviving, not from old people living longer.
Life expectancy rose from – years in 1950 to –: – for women and – for men. The sharpest fall in the record was in –, – below –, the pandemic year. Of every 1,000 babies born, – died before their first birthday in 1950 and – now; – and – before their fifth.
How fast cities grow
Urban and rural IndiaAbout a third of Indians live in places the census calls urban
"Urban" follows the Census of India: statutory towns with a municipality, and census towns with at least 5,000 people, a density of 400 a square kilometre and three-quarters of working men outside farming. Many large villages that look and work like towns are counted as rural, so this share understates how urban India's way of life has become.
The UN's urban figures were last revised in 2018 and, without a census since 2011, everything after rests on projection.
The urban share rose from – in 1960 to – in 2018, and is projected at – for –: – people in urban areas and – in rural ones. On the same projections the largest city holds – people, and cities of a million or more hold – of all Indians, against – in 1960.
Urban India is growing several times faster than rural India
Cities grow three ways: their own births, people moving in from villages, and villages being reclassified as towns when they cross the census thresholds. The figures do not separate the three. A jump at a census year is partly reclassification.
In the latest year urban India grew by – and rural India by –. Both figures after 2018 are the UN's projections, not measurements.
Who leaves, who arrives
International migrationMore people leave India than arrive, though few relative to its size
Net migration is a balance, and it hides how many move each way. It counts people crossing India's borders to live, not the far larger movement within India, from village to city and state to state, which the census and surveys measure separately. Money sent home by Indians abroad is in the external account guide.
In the latest estimate year about – more people left India than arrived; the largest net outflow in the record was – in –. People born abroad and living in India numbered – in –, – of the population, down from – in –. India hosted – refugees in –.
What if
The UN's projection variantsHalf a child per woman separates a shrinking India from a growing one
The variants change one assumption at a time. Low and high move fertility half a child below or above the medium path; constant fertility holds today's rate forever; zero migration closes the borders. None is a prediction. Together they show which assumption matters most, and for India that is the number of children families choose to have.
By 2100 the variants range from – (–) to – (–). With no migration at all, India would have – people in 2100.

What this measures
India counts its people in a census every ten years. The 2021 census was postponed, so the latest count is from 2011; the next is scheduled for 2027. Between censuses, the Sample Registration System records births and deaths in a large sample of villages and urban blocks, and household surveys such as the NFHS ask about children, marriage and health.
The UN Population Division combines all of these into one consistent account for every country, from 1950 to the latest year (2023 in the 2024 revision), and projects forward to 2100. The medium projection uses the median of thousands of simulated paths for fertility and life expectancy; the 80% and 95% ranges come from the same simulations. It revises the whole history every two years, so a figure for 2015 in one revision can differ from the next.
The World Bank's population figures are the UN's, republished in its World Development Indicators; its urban figures come from the UN's World Urbanization Prospects, last revised in 2018. India's own official projections, by the Technical Group on Population Projections for 2011 to 2036, are a separate source and are not shown here.
How to misread these numbers
- 1
"The census says India has 1.4 billion people."
No census has been taken since 2011. Today's figure is a UN estimate built on that census and the surveys since; when the next census is published, the estimate will be revised, perhaps by tens of millions.
- 2
"Fertility is below replacement, so the population is falling."
Not yet. The large generations born before 2000 are now having children, so births still outnumber deaths by a wide margin. The UN projects growth to continue for decades after fertility fell below 2.1.
- 3
"The UN projects 1.7 billion Indians in 2061."
It projects that on its medium assumptions, with a wide range around it. A projection says what follows if fertility, mortality and migration behave as assumed; it is not a forecast and not a target.
- 4
"The demographic dividend guarantees growth."
A rising working-age share creates a chance, not an outcome. It adds to growth only if people of working age find productive work, and it closes whether or not they do.
- 5
"Only a third of India is urban."
A third lives in places the census classifies as towns. By density or work, many more Indians live in settlements that behave like towns, and the share depends heavily on that definition.
Every series, every cut
All 928 series behind this guide, from 9 files, at every level the source publishes them, including the ones no chart above draws. Find a state, an item or a sector, sort by the latest value or by the change on a year earlier, and download any file whole. A dash means the source has no figure for a year earlier, or the change would mean nothing.
