Money: Payment systems, RBI

How India pays, one scan at a time.

Every month the Reserve Bank counts the payments that pass through India's banks and payment networks: each UPI scan, card swipe, bank transfer, cheque and ATM withdrawal, and the money each one moved. Those counts describe how a country buys tea, pays rent, receives a pension and settles a business deal.

July 2026, RBI payment system indicators
UPI payments in July

Payments made over the Unified Payments Interface in July 2026: scans of a QR code at a shop, transfers to a friend's phone number, bills paid from an app. Each one is counted once, whatever its size.

Of all retail payments
–
What the figures say

UPI carried 2,366 crore payments in July 2026, 21.5% more than in the same month a year earlier, and moved ₹29.9 lakh crore, up 19.1%. That was 87.0% of the 2,719 crore retail payments made that month, and the average UPI payment was ₹1,263, below the ₹1,289 of July 2025.

Wallet and prepaid card payments grew fastest of the fourteen channels counted here, up 29.9%; credit card payments rose 24.5% while debit cards fell 9.4%. Across all card payments, credit cards outnumber debit cards six to one; at shops' card machines, four to one. IMPS fell 24.4%, cheques and other paper 9.7%, cash withdrawals at ATMs 8.9%, cash withdrawals at micro ATMs 3.2% and APBS benefit credits 1.4%, while NACH debits, the EMIs and bills, rose 10.2%. NACH credits, salaries and pensions, fell 26.5%, the weakest of them. RTGS and NEFT still carry the money: ₹223.1 lakh crore and ₹46.6 lakh crore, or 69.5% and 14.5% of the value of all payments.

What they do not say

It counts payments, not people: we do not know how many Indians use UPI, how often any one of them pays, or whether the same person is behind a wallet scan and a cheque at a counter.

The RBI publishes no typical payment, only averages, and an average is pulled up by a few large transfers: ₹1,263 for UPI in July 2026 is a mean, not what most people pay. Values are weaker still, because the same rupee is counted every time it moves, so the totals measure traffic, not spending or GDP. Cash payments are not counted at all, and the cash the public holds has kept growing, to ₹42.1 lakh crore on 15 September 2026, up 13.6% from a year earlier.

The falls sit beside the rises: IMPS, debit cards, cheques, salary and pension credits through NACH, benefit transfers under APBS, and cash taken from ATMs and micro ATMs all ran below their July 2025 levels, while wallets and prepaid cards were the fastest-growing of the fourteen counts, at 29.9%. July 2026 is also the newest month, and the newest month can still be revised.

02

What one payment is worth

Average value of one transaction, July 2026

Each payment system has a job, and the size of a typical payment shows what it is. UPI carries the small, everyday spending: vegetables, an auto fare, a mobile recharge, money sent home. A FASTag toll is smaller still. Cards are used for bigger shopping and online orders. NEFT moves rent, fees and supplier bills. NACH is the machinery behind salaries, pensions, dividends, loan instalments and mutual fund SIPs, collected or paid in bulk on a fixed date. RTGS, open only to large amounts, is where companies and banks settle with each other.

Aadhaar-based payments are the welfare state's plumbing. APBS carries government benefits into the bank accounts linked to a person's Aadhaar number, and AePS lets someone draw that money from a banking correspondent in the village, with a thumbprint, where there is no ATM.

UPI carries small payments; RTGS carries very large ones

How to read this

Each dot is one payment system. The further right, the larger an average payment. The scale jumps by ten at each gridline, because the systems differ by that much: an RTGS transfer is thousands of times a UPI payment.

An average is pulled up by a few very large payments, so it can sit well above what an ordinary payment looks like. The RBI does not publish the typical (median) payment, so we do not know it.

As of July 2026

An average UPI payment was –, a debit card payment –, a credit card payment –, a cash withdrawal at an ATM –, a FASTag toll –, a NEFT transfer –, a cheque – and an RTGS transfer –.

As UPI spread, the average payment got smaller

How to read this

A falling average does not mean people spend less. It means UPI took over smaller and smaller payments, the ones once made in coins and small notes, so each added payment pulls the average down. A rising number of payments with a falling average is what a habit spreading looks like.

As of July 2026

The average was – in July, against – in November 2019 and a high of – in –.

03

How to read the RBI's payment tables

Two numbers for every system. Volume is the number of transactions; value is the rupees they moved. They tell different stories. UPI carries most of India's payments by number and a small part of the money. RTGS is the opposite: a few lakh transfers a month that move most of the money in the economy, because companies, banks and the government settle there.

Who reports. The National Payments Corporation of India runs UPI, IMPS, NACH, AePS, APBS, NETC and the cheque clearing system; the RBI runs RTGS and NEFT; banks and card networks report card payments; prepaid instrument issuers report wallets. The RBI gathers all of it into one monthly table, printed in its Bulletin about six weeks after the month ends. Recent months can be revised in later Bulletins.

The table changed in November 2019. The RBI re-organised it into settlement systems, payment systems, channels, cash withdrawals and infrastructure. Some lines were redefined on the way: card figures stopped counting cash drawn at ATMs, which became a line of its own, and UPI, AePS and APBS each got their own line. So the table before November 2019 and the table after are two different rulers. This guide draws them side by side and never joins them into one line. The RBI's Handbook restates the new classification back to 2015-16 for whole years, and this guide uses that too.

What is not here. Cash payments between people are not counted anywhere: the closest measures are cash withdrawals at ATMs and the currency the public holds, both shown below. Payments inside a bank's own systems that never reach a network are left out. The RBI's table has no state or district detail, and NPCI's figures by app and by bank are not part of it. Nor is there a comparison with other countries here yet: the official source for that, the payment statistics of the Bank for International Settlements' payments committee, is not yet in the data this site reads, so we do not show it.

UPI and everything else

Monthly, crore transactions and ₹ lakh crore

UPI now carries more payments than every other system put together, many times over

Number of payments a month, crore: UPI, and all other retail payment systems combined (cards, wallets, IMPS, NEFT, NACH, Aadhaar payments, cheques), November 2019 to July 2026.

How to read this

Two lines: UPI in blue, and every other retail system added together in grey. The grey line has grown too, but UPI's has grown so much faster that the rest looks flat beside it. A crore is ten million, so 100 crore payments a month is a billion.

This is a count of payments, not of people. One shopkeeper receiving a hundred payments a day adds a hundred; we do not know from this table how many Indians use UPI.

As of July 2026

UPI carried – payments in July worth –, against – in November 2019. All other retail systems together carried –. UPI's number of payments was – on a year earlier.

UPI carries most of the payments; RTGS carries most of the money

The left panel counts payments, the right panel counts rupees. The same systems sit in the same order in both, so read across: a long bar on the left and a short one on the right is a system of many small payments; the reverse is a system of few large ones.

As of July 2026

UPI was – of all payments by number and – by value. RTGS was – by number and – by value. NEFT was – of the money.

How to read this

Each line is the rupees a system moved in a month. RTGS sits far above the rest because it carries the settlements of companies, banks and governments; a single transfer can be crores. March towers each year: it is when the financial year closes, taxes fall due and accounts are squared.

These sums dwarf India's GDP because the same rupee is counted every time it changes hands, and much of it is money moving between financial institutions. They measure how busy the plumbing is, not the size of the economy.

As of July 2026

In July, RTGS moved –, NEFT –, UPI –, IMPS – and cheques –.

Cards, cash and the machines

Monthly

Credit cards overtook debit cards, as debit card payments shrank

Card payments a month, crore, by kind of card, November 2019 to July 2026. Payments at shops' card machines (PoS) and elsewhere, mostly online; cash withdrawals not included.
–
credit card payments, July 2026
Source: RBI, Payment System Indicators (DBIE report 612), lines 4.1 and 4.2. Cards in issue: the infrastructure lines of the same table. Source
How to read this

Most Indians with a bank account have a debit card; far fewer have a credit card. Yet credit cards now carry more payments. The debit card's everyday work, paying a shop from your own account, went to UPI, which does the same thing from a phone. Credit cards kept what UPI did not offer at first: credit, reward points and online shopping.

As of July 2026

Credit cards carried – payments in July and debit cards –, against – and – in November 2019. Banks had issued – credit cards and – debit cards.

Fewer trips to the ATM, but more cash in people's hands

–
currency with the public
Source: RBI. ATM withdrawals: Payment System Indicators (DBIE report 612), line 3. Currency with the public: RBI money supply statistics, the same series the credit guide draws. Source
How to read this

The left panel counts trips to the ATM; the right panel is all the notes and coins held outside banks. If digital payments had replaced cash, both would fall. Only the first has. People draw cash less often but in larger amounts, and the stock of cash has kept growing with the economy. The deep dip in the right panel is November 2016, when old ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes were withdrawn.

Cash held is not cash spent: much of it is savings kept at home, or money held for weddings, farming and travel. We do not know how many payments are still made in cash.

As of July 2026

Indians drew cash from ATMs – times in July, against – in November 2019, taking out –. Currency with the public was – on 15 September 2026, against – in November 2019.

Many more QR codes than card machines, and far more card machines than ATMs

The payment infrastructure at the end of each month, November 2019 to July 2026. Each panel has its own scale.
–
UPI QR codes, July 2026
Source: RBI, Payment System Indicators (DBIE report 612), infrastructure lines. UPI QR codes reported from September 2020. Source
How to read this

A QR code costs a shopkeeper nothing but a printed sticker; a card machine has to be bought or rented. That difference is much of why UPI spread to vegetable carts and tea stalls that never took cards. White-label ATMs are run by companies that are not banks. Micro ATMs are the handheld devices of banking correspondents, the agents who bring banking to villages.

These are counts of things in place, not of things in use. A QR code printed once and never scanned is still counted.

As of July 2026

There were – UPI QR codes, – card machines, – ATMs (– of them white-label) and – micro ATMs. Card machines were – on a year earlier.

06

Every other way money moves

Monthly, number of payments

Twelve payment systems, each on its own scale

–
NACH debits (EMIs, SIPs), July 2026
Source: RBI, Payment System Indicators (DBIE report 612). Source
How to read this

IMPS was the instant transfer before UPI, and much of its work has moved to UPI. NACH debits are payments you agreed to once and that then repeat: loan instalments, insurance premiums, SIPs, utility bills. NACH credits and APBS go the other way, from employers and governments to people. AePS cash withdrawals are rural India taking benefit money out at a banking correspondent. UPI over USSD works on a basic phone with no internet, and is used very little.

As of July 2026

In July: NACH debits –, APBS benefit credits –, AePS cash withdrawals –, IMPS –, NEFT –, wallets – and FASTag tolls –. IMPS was – on a year earlier.

Phones carry the payments; net banking still carries more of the money

–
mobile payments, July 2026
Source: RBI, Payment System Indicators (DBIE report 612), "other payment channels". The channel lines count payments by how they were started; they overlap with the system lines above. Source
How to read this

The channel is the screen a payment starts on, not the system that carries it: a UPI payment from an app is a mobile payment, and so is a NEFT transfer made in a bank's app. Businesses still move large sums through net banking on a computer, which is why internet banking carries few payments but a great deal of money.

As of July 2026

Mobile payments moved – in – transactions; internet banking moved – in –.

The long view

Fiscal years and months, since 1970-71

A decade of payments, year by year: UPI from almost nothing to most of the count

Number of payments in each fiscal year, crore, 2015-16 to 2025-26: UPI and every other payment (RTGS and retail). The RBI's Handbook, in the classification it adopted in November 2019, restated to 2015-16.

How to read this

Each bar is one fiscal year, April to March. The blue part is UPI, which began in August 2016; the grey part is everything else. The year in progress is left out until its March is in.

As of 2025-26

Indians made – payments in 2025-26, – of them by UPI. In 2015-16 they made –.

Fifteen years before UPI: NEFT and card payments at shops since 2004

Number of payments a month, crore: NEFT, and card payments at shops' card machines (PoS), April 2004 to July 2026. Two tables: the RBI's old layout to October 2019 (pale) and the re-organised one from November 2019 (solid), drawn side by side, never joined.
–

Source: RBI, Payment System Indicators (DBIE report 612), old layout (lines 4.3, 5.1.2, 5.2.2) and re-organised layout (lines 2.6, 4.1.1, 4.2.1). The old table repeats July 2010 to June 2011 in the rows for August 2006 to July 2007, so that year is left blank. Source
How to read this

The dotted line in November 2019 is where the RBI changed its table, so the lines stop and start again rather than run through. NEFT reads much the same on both sides. Card payments do not: the old table's "usage at PoS" is close to the new table's card payments of every kind, which suggests it also counted online card payments that the new table puts under "others". The RBI does not say, so read the two card stretches as different measures. The jump in card payments late in 2016 is demonetisation, when cash ran short for weeks and shops that had a card machine suddenly used it.

As of July 2026

NEFT carried – payments in July, against – in April 2004. Card payments at shops were –.

Cheques peaked and have been falling since

Cheques cleared in each fiscal year, crore, 1970-71 to 2025-26. The RBI Handbook's cheque clearance series to 2015-16, then the paper instruments line of its payment system table, drawn side by side.

How to read this

For decades the cheque was how salaries, rents and business bills were paid. The count rose with the number of bank accounts until NEFT, cards and then UPI took its work. Cheques have not disappeared: businesses, landlords and governments still write them.

As of 2025-26

– cheques were cleared in 2025-26, against a high of – in – and – in 1970-71.

How to read this

A clearing house was once a room where banks of a town exchanged the cheques drawn on each other. The Cheque Truncation System replaced the paper with images, so cheques no longer travel. Centres were folded into three grids, at Mumbai, New Delhi and Chennai, and then into one national grid. That is why the city lines stop: the cheques did not vanish, they moved to the grid.

As of March 2026

India had – in March 2026, against – in March 2005. The national grid cleared – cheques in 2025-26.

08

The digital rupee

e₹ in circulation, end-March

The e-rupee (e₹) is money issued by the RBI itself in digital form, like a banknote that lives in a phone wallet. It is not UPI: a UPI payment moves money between two bank accounts, while an e-rupee is the RBI's own liability, held in a wallet a bank provides. The RBI began pilots for banks and large institutions (wholesale) in November 2022 and for the public (retail) in December 2022.

The e-rupee is a rounding error beside cash

Retail Wholesale
Source: RBI, Handbook of Statistics on the Indian Economy, e₹ in Circulation (DBIE report 1404). The RBI Innovation Hub's copy of the same table matches it cell for cell. Source
How to read this

Each bar is the e-rupee outstanding on one 31 March. The RBI's table counts e-rupee held, not how often it is spent, so we do not know how many people use it or for what. Retail e-rupee is issued in tokens of fixed denominations, like notes.

As of March 2026

e₹ in circulation was – in March 2026, against – a year earlier: – of the currency the public held. The RBI's table for March 2026 puts – of the retail e-rupee in ₹1 tokens and – in ₹500 tokens, where a year earlier ₹500 tokens held –. The table does not say why, and we do not know.

09

How to misread these numbers

  • 1

    "UPI has replaced cash."

It has replaced a great many cash payments, but the cash the public holds has kept growing. People draw money from ATMs less often and in larger amounts. Both things are true at once, and the RBI's tables cannot say how many payments are still made in notes.

  • 2

"Debit card payments collapsed in 2019."

Part of the fall is a change in the table. Until October 2019 a debit card's figures included cash drawn at ATMs; from November 2019 those are a separate line. Compare the two layouts only after reading what each line counts.

  • 3

"India's digital payments are worth many times its GDP."

They are, and it means little. Payment values count every transfer, including banks and companies moving the same money back and forth through RTGS. GDP counts what is produced once. The two are different kinds of number.

  • 4

"The average UPI payment is –, so that is what a UPI payment looks like."

An average is pulled up by a few large transfers, so an ordinary UPI payment may be much smaller. The RBI does not publish the typical payment, so we cannot say how small.

  • 5

"Payments grew fast, so spending grew as fast."

The number of payments grows when the same spending is split into more, smaller payments, as it is when tea and vegetables move to UPI. Growth in payment counts is a sign of a habit changing, not a measure of consumption.

  • 6

    "The e-rupee is UPI."

UPI moves money between bank accounts. The e-rupee is a different form of money, issued by the RBI and held in a separate wallet. The two can work together, but the RBI counts them in separate tables.

Sources, method and revisions

Source of record

Reserve Bank of India: Payment System Indicators (RBI Bulletin Table 45, monthly, and the Handbook of Statistics on the Indian Economy, yearly), Statistical Tables Relating to Banks in India (Tables 22 and 27) and the Handbook's e₹ table, read from India Atlas's archived copy of the RBI's DBIE database. Currency with the public comes from this site's credit guide. Data vintage –.

Checked against the RBI's own publications: UPI in July 2026 (2,36,583.53 lakh transactions, ₹29,87,880.48 crore) and 2,52,508 ATMs (Bulletin Table 45); UPI in 2024-25 (18,587 crore transactions, RBI Annual Report); e₹ in circulation of ₹1,016.5 crore at end-March 2025 (RBI Annual Report).

Method

Every DBIE value is printed once per display unit; this guide keeps the actual figures. Averages, shares and growth rates are computed here. Totals are checked against their parts every time the data is rebuilt, the yearly table against the sum of its months, and the RBI's own printed growth rates against growth computed from its levels.

Two defects in the DBIE export are corrected, both disclosed: the old table's ATM and PoS counts are stored multiplied by ten lakh, and the Handbook's old-layout yearly table is stored at a hundredth of its true values (it is not used; the monthly table covers those years).

Revisions and breaks

The RBI re-organised its payment table in November 2019; the old layout (April 2004 to October 2019) and the new are separate rulers, never joined. Cheque clearing moved from city clearing houses to three grids and then one national grid, so centre-wise cheque counts stop and start. Recent months may be revised in later Bulletins.

This guide

Version 1.0, built October 2026 from data to July 2026. Revised each month when the RBI Bulletin publishes the next month.
