The speed of the whole economy.

Four times a year, the statisticians add up everything India produces, every factory, farm, office and street cart, in principle, and tell us how fast it is growing. The answer is one number built from a hundred arguments.

The Q1 FY27 print
Current reading
–

Real GDP growth, April to June 2026, on the 2022–23 base: down from 8.6% the quarter before, against a rough pre-pandemic trend of 6%.

vs 6% trend: –
What the print says

GDP grew 7.8% in Q1 FY27, down from 8.6% in Q4 FY26, a fall of 0.8 points. Consumption rose 7.1% and investment 12.0%, the hottest of the four headline series, and investment has now risen for four straight prints, since Q1 FY26. GVA grew 8.2%, faster than GDP, and that gap is net taxes, not production.

Underneath, the spread is wider still: exports grew 12.1% and finance & real estate 12.1%, while imports fell 1.1% and mining & quarrying shrank 2.4%, with utilities the group that sped up most, to 8.9%. Nominal GDP grew 10.3% and the deflator 2.3%. In the annual accounts, the gross saving rate was 34.8% of GDP, capital formation grew 8.1%, and subsidies sped up most among those lines, to 7.7%.

What it does not say

It does not say the average Indian is 7.8% better off in Q1 FY27: GDP counts the total, not who received it, and the informal economy behind it is estimated rather than measured.

This is the first estimate of the quarter, so the 7.8% will be revised; by how much, we do not know. The headline also hides a wide spread: among the eight industry groups, growth runs from 12.1% in finance and real estate down to -2.4% in mining and quarrying, and utilities, at 8.9%, is the rate that sped up most from a year earlier.

Within the quarter, investment grew 12.0%, a fourth straight rise, and GVA 8.2%; consumption was the weakest of the four at 7.1%, and exports grew 12.1% while imports shrank 1.1%. Nominal GDP grew 10.3% and the deflator was 2.3%; the annual accounts put gross saving at 34.8% of GDP.

How to read this

Every decade or so the statisticians rebuild GDP on a fresh base year: new weights, new source data, new prices to hold constant. The rebuilt series is a better map of today's economy and a different map of yesterday's: the same quarter gets a new growth rate, sometimes a point away from the old one. Neither number is a lie. They answer the same question with different rulers.

This atlas never splices rulers. The decade plate below stays on the 2011–12 base it was drawn on; this panel is the same economy on the 2022–23 base, where the quarterly releases now continue. When enough new-base history accumulates, the new base takes over the whole guide: side by side until then.

As of the Q1 FY27 print

The 2011–12-base series ended with the November 2025 release; the three quarters since exist only here. The latest, –, reads –, after – in –; investment grew – in the latest quarter.

The rebase also re-scored the overlap: the June 2025 quarter reads – on the old base and – on the new: – apart, from the same underlying returns. That gap is the whole argument for never splicing bases.

The same eight engines as the 2011–12 plate above, on the new ruler. The new base re-weights them: each panel's share of GVA is computed afresh from 2022–23 prices, so a sector's weight here is not comparable with its weight on the old plate. Read each panel's shape, and read the shares as today's economy.

All rows are on the 2022–23 base. Two denominators share this table: expenditure components are shares of nominal GDP in 2025-26; the four industry rows are shares of nominal GVA over the last four quarters, because that is how the production side is added up. Neither set is a share of the other.

The demand side of the economy in 2025-26, on the 2022–23 base. Net exports (–) and the statistical discrepancy (–) close the sum to 100. Consumption dwarfs everything: which is why a cautious consumer matters more to the headline than any single factory, and why "investment-led growth" at – of GDP is still the junior partner. Section 10 follows each share back to 1950-51.

How to read this

Each line compares one quarter with the same quarter a year earlier. The deep V is the pandemic: a real collapse in mid-2020, then a rebound a year later that is arithmetic, not boom: growth measured against a destroyed base. Read the 2020–22 stretch as a wound and its scar, not as information about trend.

GDP and GVA move together because they are nearly the same thing: GDP = GVA + net indirect taxes. Consumption (PFCE) is the demand engine; when it outgrows GDP, households are confident, and vice versa.

As of November 2025, the old base's last print

By the time this base closed, the base-effect years were over: its last four quarters, to Q2 FY26, read –, the cleanest trend signal since before the pandemic, and accelerating, with consumption growing nearly as fast as the headline. The quarters since are on the 2022–23 base, in the current reading above and the new-base plate further down.

The caution: these are early estimates. The quarterly series leans heavily on listed-company results and government accounts; the informal sector is extrapolated. Revisions over the next three years will redraw parts of this picture.

06

What this measures

Gross Domestic Product is the market value of everything produced inside India's borders in a period, with double-counting removed. It can be added up three ways: by what is produced, by what is spent, and by what is earned: and in India the three never quite agree, so the accounts publish a "discrepancies" line to absorb the difference.

The headline is real GDP: values at the constant prices of a base year, 2022–23 on the current series, so that growth means more output, not just higher prices. The nominal figure, current prices, runs several points higher when inflation is high, and it is the nominal number that tax collections and debt ratios actually care about.

Unlike the CPI, which is final a month after release, the national accounts are revised relentlessly: a quarter's growth is first estimated two months after it ends, then restated as annual surveys, tax data and the new base year arrive. Each new quarter's first estimate is a pencil sketch that hardens over three years.

GVA measures producers' output net of input costs, before product taxes and subsidies. Economists often prefer it as the cleaner read on supply conditions; newspapers usually quote GDP. When the two diverge, the cause is almost always net taxes: check before reading meaning into it.

As of November 2025, the old base's last print

At – in Q2 FY26, GVA trailed GDP only slightly: subsidy arithmetic, not weak production.

How to read this

The three engines the headline plates skip. Government consumption is the state's own spending on salaries and services: about a tenth of GDP, and the only engine a budget can start at will. Exports add demand from abroad; imports subtract it, because GDP counts what is made here, not what is bought here. A quarter where imports outrun exports is a quarter where net trade dragged on the headline.

All three swing harder than consumption. Government spending lurches with the fiscal calendar; trade answers to the world cycle and the oil bill. Read them for composition, not for trend.

As of November 2025, the old base's last print

Imports grew – in the September 2025 quarter against – for exports, so net trade subtracted from the print. Government consumption read –. That quarter belonged to households and builders, not to the state or the border.

This is the supply side of the same economy: who made the output, not who bought it. The eight groups sum to total GVA, so the headline is always their weighted average: services are over half the weight, and they set the level. Watch the scales: each panel has its own, and a flat-looking farm panel hides less drama than a flat-looking finance panel.

Agriculture answers to the monsoon, not the cycle: it was the one engine still running through the lockdown quarter. Construction and trade are the swing engines; they fell close to half and rebuilt from there. Public administration moves with the budget, which makes it steady and tells you little about private demand.

As of November 2025, the old base's last print

In Q2 FY26, this base's last quarter, the spread ran from – to –. Finance and real estate was the largest engine and the fastest; manufacturing, at –, was having its best run in over a year. Mining was the one engine in the red: a monsoon story as much as a commodity one.

Agriculture grew –: its second good year in a row, and one reason food prices, and with them the CPI, were so quiet through 2025. The eight engines on the new base are in the plate further down.

The deflator wedge

Nominal vs real, y/y %, quarterly

–
Q2 FY26, deflator y/y
Source: MoSPI, nominal series at current prices, clearly a different animal from the real headline, deflator = current-price level ÷ constant-price level, computed, not published Source ↗
How to read this

The gap between the two GDP lines is the deflator: the price of everything the economy produces, not just what households consume. It is the broadest inflation gauge India has: and the least familiar, because no press release leads with it. Tax revenue, debt ratios and corporate toplines all live on the nominal line; the real line is what the growth debate is about.

The deflator leans heavily on wholesale prices, a known quirk of Indian national accounting, so it tracks the WPI more than the CPI. That makes it honest about producer prices and unreliable as a cost-of-living measure. It can even turn negative while consumer inflation stays positive, as it did in FY16. When the two price worlds diverge, the deflator sides with the factory gate.

As of November 2025, the old base's last print

In Q2 FY26 the wedge had nearly closed: nominal GDP grew – against – real, an implied deflator of –, because wholesale prices had stalled. Three years earlier the deflator peaked at – and nominal growth flattered every ratio it touched.

A near-zero deflator cuts the other way: real growth looks fast while tax collections and nominal incomes grow no faster than the headline. The current reading at the top of the page gives the deflator on the new base.

–
–, NDP y/y
Source: MoSPI, NAS annual accounts, each panel on its own y-scale, zero rule shown, the detailed accounts, taxes, subsidies, capital, run two years behind the headline and stop at FY24 Source ↗
How to read this

The quarterly print is one number; the annual accounts are a ledger, and the ledger teaches the identities. GDP is GVA plus taxes on products minus subsidies: that wedge is the whole difference between the two headlines, and it moves when policy moves, not when factories do. Net domestic product strips out capital consumption: the wearing-out of machines, roads and software. Gross counts everything made; net counts what is left after replacing what wore out.

Gross national income asks a different question: not what was made here, but what residents earned anywhere. The two travel together for India; the gap is remittances and profits crossing the border.

As of the January 2026 accounts

The FY26 advance estimates put NDP growth at – and GNI at –. The detailed ledger stops at FY24: product taxes grew – while subsidies printed –: a wedge that flattered GDP against GVA that year. Capital consumption grew –, and it has run between – and – in every year of this ledger, boom, bust or lockdown. Depreciation does not do cycles.

One account is missing from the panels because it only exists in rupees of the day: gross saving, published at current prices alone. As a share of nominal GDP it was – in FY24, down from – at the start of this ledger: the country invests more than it saves at home, and the difference is the current account.

The saving rate: what the country keeps of what it earns

Gross saving, share of nominal GDP, current prices, FY13 to FY24, the one accounts series published only in rupees of the day
–
–, % of GDP
Source: MoSPI, NAS annual accounts, saving is published at current prices only, so it is shown as a share of nominal GDP, not a real growth rate, the gap between saving and investment is the current account Source ↗
How to read this

Households, firms and government earn income and either spend or keep it. The kept share is gross saving: the pool that funds domestic investment. When investment runs above saving, the difference arrives from abroad and the current account turns to deficit. The line is the economy's own savings habit, distinct from how fast it grows.

As of the FY24 accounts

The saving rate has slid from – at the start of this ledger to under a third of GDP: a fall of –. The investment rate has held higher, so the gap is borrowed from overseas. Whether the slide means households are consuming more or simply earning less is a question the aggregate cannot answer.

Source: MoSPI, NAS, every share is current prices over current prices, valuables are published only from 1998-99 on the back series, each panel on its own scale, the three rulers are never joined Source ↗
How to read this

GDP measured by spending: what households buy (consumption), what is spent on buildings, machines and roads (fixed investment), what the state spends on its own services (government consumption), goods piled up in warehouses (change in stocks), gold and jewellery bought as a store of value (valuables), and what the world buys from us less what we buy from it (net exports). Each panel is that line's share of GDP in rupees of the day.

The long view is a story of a country growing richer. In the early 1950s almost everything earned was eaten, worn or lived in; there was little left over to build with. As incomes rose, the consumption share fell and the investment share rose. That shift is what development looks like in the accounts.

The three rulers never join. The 2022–23 base counts consumption differently (new surveys, new weights), so in the years both bases cover it puts the consumption share several points lower. Neither ruler is wrong; they are different measurements of the same spending.

As of the 2025-26 accounts

On the new base, consumption took – of GDP in 2025-26, fixed investment – and government consumption –. Valuables, mostly gold, took –, – the change in stocks (–). Net exports subtracted –: India bought more from the world than it sold.

The same year on the old base put consumption at –. The gap between the two rulers, –, compares with a largest year-to-year move of – on the old base since 2011-12.

How to read this

GDP counts what is produced inside India. Two flows across the border change what residents actually have. Primary income is earnings on work and capital that cross the border: interest on foreign loans, profits of foreign-owned companies sent home, wages of Indians working abroad for short spells. India pays out more than it receives, so the line sits below zero. Adding it to GDP gives gross national income.

Current transfers are mostly remittances: money a nurse in Riyadh or an engineer in Texas sends to parents in Kerala or Punjab. Adding them gives gross national disposable income, the widest measure of what the country can spend or save. In the 1950s the line was close to nothing; the Gulf boom of the 1970s lifted it, and the 1990s and 2000s lifted it again.

As of the 2024-25 accounts

Net transfers came to – of GDP in 2024-25 on the new base, up from – in – on the back series. Net primary income was –. Together they make gross national disposable income – of GDP: India's residents have slightly more to spend than the country produces.

India's GDP is built from production: what each industry adds. Spending is estimated separately, from surveys, tax and trade data. The two should match, and they never quite do. The statisticians publish the gap as a line called "discrepancies" and leave it in. Above zero, measured output ran ahead of measured spending; below zero, the reverse.

The API's filter offers an approach cut (production, expenditure, income), but the data it returns is the same for every approach, so this plate computes the gap from the published levels. The annual figures are in the data table below.

As of the Q1 FY27 print

The latest quarter's discrepancy is – of GDP. Across the – quarters on the new base the gap averaged – in absolute size, against – on the old base. The new base's final years, –, are balanced to zero at current prices: they are the years for which MoSPI has published supply and use tables, which reconcile the two sides.

The accounts split the economy into kinds of owner: households (with the small charities and trusts that serve them), private companies, public-sector companies, financial firms and government. Each saves part of its income and invests part of it in new buildings, machines and roads. Where a sector saves more than it invests, the surplus flows to the others through bank deposits, insurance, provident funds, mutual funds and government bonds.

Households are India's lender. Their saving pays for their own homes and tractors and still leaves a surplus, lent to companies building factories and to governments running deficits. A government below zero on saving is spending more on salaries, pensions, interest and subsidies than it collects: it borrows before it builds a single road.

Household saving here includes physical saving (houses, gold, farm equipment) as well as financial saving. The split between the two is in MoSPI's yearly publication, not in the data this guide reads; for household borrowing see the credit and debt guides.

As of the 2024-25 accounts

Households saved – of GDP and invested –, a surplus of –. Private non-financial companies invested – against saving of –. General government saved – and invested –. The whole economy saved – of GDP.

Below the eight industry groups the accounts publish eighteen sub-industries: inside farming (crops, livestock, forestry, fishing), inside manufacturing (food, textiles, metals, machinery, the rest), inside trade (shops and repair, hotels and restaurants) and inside transport (rail, road, water, air, storage, communication). Each dot is the compound real growth of that sub-industry across the whole series; the figure beside the name is its share of the economy at the end.

A fast dot with a tiny share, such as storage or air transport, is a small business growing quickly. A slow dot with a big share, such as crops, moves the economy more than any of them.

As of the 2023-24 accounts

Crops' share of the economy fell from – to – while livestock's rose from – to –: milk, eggs and meat now carry more of farm growth than grain. In manufacturing, food processing grew slowest, – a year, and machinery fastest, –. Sub-industries come only with the revised estimates, so they end at 2023-24; the new base publishes them to –, in the data table below.

–
–
Source: MoSPI, NAS annual estimates at each stage, growth computed from levels against the previous year in the same release, the highlighted years are the largest moves up and down Source ↗
How to read this

A year's growth is printed six times or more. The first advance estimate comes in early January, before the year is over, from three quarters of data and a projection. The second advance follows at the end of February, and the provisional estimate at the end of May, once the year has ended. Then come the first, second and third revised estimates, one each February, as company accounts, the industry survey, farm data and tax returns arrive. Each line starts at zero, the first print, and shows how far later prints moved from it.

Revisions are not mistakes. The early estimates lean on fast indicators (listed companies, government accounts, the industrial index); the informal economy is extrapolated from them until slow surveys arrive. When the slow data disagree with the fast, the number moves. A line above zero is a year that turned out better than first thought.

Stage growth is computed from the published levels, against the previous year's figure in the same release. MoSPI's own one-decimal rate is kept beside it in the data table; it is sometimes cut rather than rounded (it gives 9.1 for 2023-24's first revised estimate, where the press note and the levels give 9.2).

As of the 2025-26 accounts

Across the – years that have been revised, the average move from the first print to the latest was – in either direction; – of them were revised up. The biggest upward move was –; the biggest downward, –. The 2022–23 base is too young to have a path of its own: –.

Read the decades, not the years. A single year can be a drought or a war; a decade is a regime. The averages below are of the blue line alone.

As of the 2011-12 back series

On the back series, growth averaged – a year from 1951-52 to 1979-80, – through the 1980s and – from 1991-92 to 2011-12. The economy shrank in five years, 1957-58, 1965-66, 1966-67, 1972-73 and 1979-80; the deepest fall was –, and the best year –. The back series closes at –; the 2011–12 base opens at –.

Saving caught up with investment, and both tripled

How to read this

Saving is the share of income the country keeps; fixed investment is the share it spends on buildings, machines and roads. When investment runs above saving, the difference is borrowed from abroad. The gap between the two lines is, roughly, the current account.

As of the 2011-12 back series

As a share of GDP, saving rose from – to a peak of –; fixed investment from – to –. Investment ran above saving in 49 of these 61 years.

Farming was 53% of the economy in 1950-51; by 2025-26 it was 18.2%

Each industry's share of nominal GVA: the NSO back series (1950-51 to 2011-12), the 2011–12 base and the 2022–23 base, three separate series, each panel on its own scale

How to read this

The make-up of what India produces, industry by industry, over seventy-five years. Each panel is one industry's share of value added in rupees of the day. A falling line is not a shrinking industry: farming produces far more food today than in 1950. It means the rest of the economy grew faster.

The share of farming fell, but the share of people who farm fell far more slowly. That gap, a large share of workers producing a small share of output, is why farm incomes lag and why so many households want a job off the land (see the jobs guide).

As of the 2025-26 accounts

Agriculture's share fell from – to – on the back series. Construction rose from – to –, and finance from – to –. Manufacturing peaked at – and stood at – in 2025-26 on the new base: India's growth came from services and construction more than from factories.

How to misread this number

  • i.

    "+20% means a boom."

After a −23% collapse, +23% leaves the level about 5% below where it started. Growth rates multiply, they do not add. Always ask what the base quarter was.

  • ii.

    "GDP growth is my growth."

GDP says nothing about distribution or headcount. Per-capita growth is lower; median experience can be lower still. An aggregate can rise while most households tread water.

  • iii.

"The first estimate is the fact."

Quarterly GDP is revised for years as better data arrives: sometimes by more than a point. The CPI settles in a month; GDP is a draft for years. Quote the vintage, not just the number.

  • iv.

    "Real and nominal are interchangeable."

Real growth strips out price change; nominal does not. With 5% inflation, 8% real growth is 13% nominal: and it is the nominal figure that swells tax receipts and shrinks debt ratios.

  • v.

    "GDP and GVA disagree."

They differ by net indirect taxes, nothing more. A GDP–GVA gap is an accounting story about taxes and subsidies, not evidence of statistical confusion.

  • vi.

    "Quarterly momentum = y/y growth."

India publishes year-on-year quarterly growth; many countries publish annualised quarter-on-quarter. The two can move in opposite directions. Never compare India's year-on-year rate with America's 2.8 without checking which convention each used.

  • vii.

"Gross is the number that matters."

Gross product counts everything made, including the output that merely replaces worn-out machines and roads. Net domestic product subtracts that depreciation, and it is the closer measure of what the country can consume or add to wealth. The wedge grows as the capital stock grows, and it never makes a headline.

  • viii.

    "The deflator is the CPI."

The GDP deflator prices what the economy produces; the CPI prices what households buy. In India the deflator leans on wholesale prices, so the two can point in opposite directions for quarters at a stretch: the deflator has printed below zero while consumer inflation ran positive. Deflating a household quantity with the GDP deflator is a category error.

  • ix.

"The new base says Indians spend less."

The 2022–23 base puts consumption several points of GDP below the old base for the same years. Nobody's shopping changed: the statisticians measured it with new surveys and new weights. A level from one base and a level from the other are different rulers, and their difference is not a trend.

  • x.

"Household saving fell, so households are poorer."

Saving is income not spent. It can fall because incomes fell, because spending rose, or because households took loans to buy houses, which shows up as investment rather than saving. The aggregate cannot tell these apart; read it beside borrowing in the credit guide.

Sources, method and revisions

Source of record

Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, National Statistical Office. "Estimates of Gross Domestic Product for the Second Quarter (July–September) of 2025–26." Press release, 28 November 2025. Constant-price levels retrieved via the eSankhyiki API, vintage –; growth rates are computed from levels, not taken from the rounded published rates.

The expenditure-side series, government consumption, exports, imports, and the annual accounts (NDP, GNI, taxes and subsidies on products, capital consumption, capital formation) are drawn from the same NAS releases, same vintage. The annual income-side accounts are not published quarterly; their detailed lines end two fiscal years behind the headline, and that gap is shown, not filled.

Version 1.9 (October 2026) takes in every row the API serves for the national account: every indicator on both bases at constant and current prices, every estimate stage of every year, GVA by 15 industry rows and 18 sub-industries, capital formation by industry of use, saving, investment, value added and depreciation by institutional sector, quarterly levels, and the NSO back series' full accounts from 1950-51. Shares, growth, net national income and the discrepancy are computed from published levels. Base 2022–23 levels were checked by hand against MoSPI's press release of 31 August 2026 (National Accounts Statistics 2026): real GDP of ₹3,01,15,428 crore for 2024-25 and ₹3,24,70,100 crore for 2025-26, exact. That release restated every new-base year for the new producer price and industrial production indices; the API holds the restated figure under the old stage label. Three source defects are worked around and disclosed: taxes and subsidies labelled ₹ lakh but published in ₹ crore; MoSPI's growth rates in the API sometimes cut rather than rounded; and an approach cut the data endpoint ignores.

Version 1.8 widened the intake to the rest of what the NAS tables serve: industry-wise real GVA for the eight sector groups (quarterly, with the release's own rounded growth rates kept as a cross-check), nominal GDP and the implied deflator (current-price over constant-price levels), the gross saving rate (saving is published at current prices only, so it appears as a share of nominal GDP), and the new 2022–23-base quarterly series as its own bundle: the two bases are never spliced. Q3 and Q4 of FY26, from the 27 February and 29 May 2026 releases, exist only on the new base. Not covered because the source does not serve it: national per-capita income: the API's per-capita indicators exist state-wise only, and this guide will not derive one from a population guess.

Revisions & uncertainty

National accounts are revised continuously: quarterly estimates are restated with each new release and finalised over roughly three years. This guide quotes vintages explicitly; where estimates conflict, both are shown.

Where something is not measured, this guide says "we do not know" rather than inventing a number.

This guide

Output, version 1.9, adds where the money goes, income from abroad, the discrepancy, who saves and invests, the eighteen sub-industries, how a GDP number is revised, and what India has made since 1950-51. Next scheduled revision: the Q2 FY27 print, due at the end of November 2026.
