Money: Bank deposits, RBI BSR-2

Where Indians keep their money.

Every year the Reserve Bank asks every bank in the country who its depositors are, what kind of account they hold, what interest they earn and how long their money is locked away. The answers describe the savings of a nation that still trusts the bank more than anything else.

The current reading

–
Household bank deposits
–

Everything Indian households held in commercial banks on 31 March: savings accounts, fixed deposits and current accounts, from individuals, small shops and partnerships to charities and self-help groups.

In fixed deposits
–
What the figures say

Households held – in banks, – of everything deposited by anyone. Of their money, – sat in fixed deposits, – in savings accounts and – in current accounts.

Individuals' fixed deposits have moved with interest rates. In March 2022, – of that money earned less than 6% a year; by –, only – did, and most of it earned between 6 and 8%.

What they do not say

They do not say how much each family has saved. These are totals across every account in the country, and a few very large deposits weigh as much as millions of small ones. Nor do they count money in post office schemes, cooperative banks, mutual funds, shares or gold, which together hold much of what households save.

The household sector also includes small businesses run as proprietorships and partnerships, so a shop's working capital counts here. The interest-rate, maturity and size tables cover individuals only, a narrower group.

Savings accounts and fixed deposits

Household deposits by type, ₹ lakh crore

About half of household bank money has always been in fixed deposits

Household deposits by type of account, ₹ lakh crore, as on 31 March. The household sector was redefined in 2018-19, so the two periods are drawn apart.
–
fixed deposits, latest

How to read this

Three lines, one for each kind of account. The pale lines on the left are the old definition of a household, used until March 2018; the solid lines from March 2019 use the new one, which follows the international system of national accounts. The two cannot be joined into one series, so the chart leaves a gap where the definition changed.

A savings account is money you can spend tomorrow. A fixed deposit is money you have agreed to leave alone for a set time in return for a higher rate. The split between the two is a rough measure of how much households are saving rather than simply keeping.

As of March 2026

Fixed deposits –, savings accounts –, current accounts –. Fixed deposits were – of household deposits, against – in March 2019.

03

At what interest rate

Individuals' fixed deposits by the rate they earn

In 2022 four-fifths of fixed-deposit money earned below 6%; by 2026 about one rupee in sixteen did

Individuals' term deposits by contracted interest rate, share of the rupee value, as on 31 March each year.
–
earning below 6%, latest
Source: RBI, BSR-2 Table 3.5 (DBIE report 865). Individuals include Hindu undivided families. Rates are those contracted when each deposit was placed, not today's card rates. Source
How to read this

Each bar is one year's stock of fixed deposits held by individuals, split by the interest rate each deposit was booked at. Darker blue means a higher rate. Because deposits are locked at the rate of the day they were made, the stock changes slowly: a rate cut takes a year or two to work through, as old deposits mature and are renewed at the new rate.

The rate on a deposit is not what the saver keeps. Inflation and tax both take a share, so a 6% deposit in a year of 6% inflation earns nothing in real terms before tax.

As of March 2026

Below 6%: – of the money. Between 6 and 7%: –. Between 7 and 8%: –. Eight per cent or more: –. Four years earlier, in March 2022, – earned below 6%.

04

For how long, and in what size

Individuals' fixed deposits, latest year

Most fixed-deposit money comes due within a year

–
maturing within a year
Source: RBI, BSR-2 Table 3.4 (DBIE report 864). Residual maturity: the time remaining, not the term the deposit was opened for. Source
How to read this

Time left to maturity tells you how quickly deposits will be renewed at new rates. When most money comes due within a year, a change in interest rates reaches savers quickly. It also shows how short a horizon most savers keep: few lock money away for more than three years.

As of March 2026

Within a year: – of the money. One to three years: –. Three years or more: –.

Most of the money sits in deposits of ₹1 lakh to ₹15 lakh

Individuals' term deposits by the size of each deposit, ₹ lakh crore, as on 31 March 2026, in the finer bands the RBI introduced that year.
–
in deposits of ₹1 lakh to ₹15 lakh
Source: RBI, BSR-2 Table 3.6 (DBIE report 866). Size of each deposit account, not of each depositor: one family can hold several. Source
How to read this

Each bar is the total held in deposits of a given size. Small deposits are numerous but hold little; the middle bands hold most of individuals' money. For companies and institutions the picture is the opposite, with deposits of a crore or more dominating, which is why individuals are shown here on their own.

As of March 2026

Deposits of ₹1 lakh to ₹15 lakh hold – of individuals' fixed-deposit money; deposits under ₹1 lakh, –; deposits of ₹1 crore or more, –.

Where, and whose

Household deposits by place, and women's deposits

Two-fifths of household deposits sit in metropolitan branches

–
metropolitan share, latest
Source: RBI, BSR-2 Table 1.2 (DBIE report 847). Population groups follow the census classification of the centre where the branch sits. Source
How to read this

Deposits are counted where the branch is, not where the depositor lives, so city branches collect some money from the towns around them. Even so, the gap is large: a rural branch serves many more depositors, each with far less.

As of March 2026

Metropolitan branches held – of household deposits and rural branches –. Women held – of all bank deposits, against – in March 2019.

Who else keeps money in banks

Source: RBI, BSR-2 Table 1.1 (DBIE report 1200), sector classification of the System of National Accounts, used since March 2019. Tables 1.x include deposits that banks keep with other banks. Source
How to read this

Every deposit has an owner, and the RBI sorts owners the way national accountants do: government, companies that make or sell things (non-financial corporations), financial firms, households, and people and firms abroad. Households include individuals and the small businesses, trusts and self-help groups that households run.

The shares move slowly, so a change of a few points over seven years is large. A falling household share does not mean households saved less; it can mean companies parked more cash in banks, or that households moved savings to mutual funds and shares.

As of March 2026

Households – of deposits (– in 2019). Non-financial companies – (–). Government –. Non-resident Indians –. Self-help groups –.

07

How old the savers are

Deposits of individuals by age, ₹ lakh crore

People over 60 hold two-fifths of what individuals keep in banks, and most of it in fixed deposits

Deposits of individuals by the age of the account holder, as on 31 March 2026, ₹ lakh crore, split into fixed deposits and savings and current accounts.

How to read this

Each bar is the money held by people of one age group, the darker part in fixed deposits. Savings build over a working life and are spent slowly after it, so the older groups hold the most. Older savers also keep more of it fixed, for the interest.

This is why a cut in deposit rates is felt hardest by retired households: for many of them the interest on a fixed deposit is a monthly income, not a bonus.

As of March 2026

Aged 60 and above: – of individuals' deposits (– in March 2023), – of it in fixed deposits. Aged 25 to 39: –. Under 18: –.

Women's share of individuals' deposits runs from under a third to nearly half, state by state

–
women's share, All India
Source: RBI, BSR-2 Table 2.6 (DBIE report 856). Women are counted inside individuals: the table's "of which female" column. Source
How to read this

A deposit is counted under the name of its holder. Where the bar is long, more of the money in individuals' names is in women's names; that is not the same as women controlling it, but it is a measure of whose name the account opens in.

As of March 2026

Highest: –. Lowest: –. All India: –, against – in March 2019.

Where the money sits

Deposits by state and district, all banks

How to read this

A state's share of deposits reflects where firms and governments bank as much as where families save. Mumbai's branches hold the accounts of companies operating across the country.

As of March 2026

– –, the next two (–) –. – states and union territories hold less than 1% each.

How to read this

Each bar is one district's share of the country's deposits. Mumbai's two districts and Bengaluru Urban alone hold about a fifth. Most districts hold well under half a per cent each, though they are where most depositors live.

As of March 2026

Mumbai –, Bengaluru Urban –. Districts that together hold half of all deposits: – of –.

09

Which banks, and who works in them

Bank groups, deposits and staff

Private banks' share of deposits rose by about six points in seven years, mostly from public sector banks

private banks' share, March 2026
Source: RBI, BSR-2 Table 1.5 (DBIE report 850). Bank groups as RBI classifies them each year; small finance banks and payments banks are newer groups. Source
How to read this

Each line is a group's share of the country's deposits. Public sector banks still hold more than half, but private banks have gained every year. Regional rural banks, the deposit-takers of the countryside, have been slowly losing share.

As of March 2026

Public sector banks – (– in 2019), private banks – (–), foreign banks –, regional rural banks –, small finance banks –.

How to read this

The share of women among bank staff has crept up from about 24% to 26% since 2019. It is lowest in the small finance banks and the payments banks, the two newest kinds of bank.

As of March 2026

Bank employees: –, – of them women. Highest share: –. Lowest: –.

Booked for how long, and the quarterly return

Term deposits by original term; deposits by quarter

Seven in ten rupees in fixed deposits are now booked for one to three years, up from half in 2022

Source: RBI, BSR-2 Table 3.1 (DBIE report 861). Original maturity is the term at booking; the time left (residual maturity) is in Plate 4. Source
How to read this

Each band is a share of the money in fixed deposits. When rates are expected to rise, savers book short so they can renew at a better rate; when rates are high, they lock in for longer. The shift since 2022 into one-to-three-year deposits followed the rise in deposit rates.

As of March 2026

One to three years: –. Under a year: –. Five years and more: – (– in 2019).

Between the annual returns, deposits grew every quarter, and the household share dips each March

–
deposits, latest quarter
Source: RBI, quarterly BSR-2 Table 1.1 (DBIE report 1302). The quarterly return leaves out regional rural banks, so it is a different total from the annual return and is drawn on its own. Source
How to read this

The quarterly return is a second instrument: it covers the same banks except the regional rural banks, so its March total sits a few lakh crore below the annual figure. Read it for movement within the year. The household share falls each March, as the deposits of companies and governments swell at the close of the financial year.

As of June 2026

Deposits – in the latest quarter, – on a year earlier. Households' share –.

11

What this measures

The Basic Statistical Return 2 is an annual census, not a sample: every scheduled commercial bank, including regional rural banks, reports every deposit account it holds on 31 March, classified by who owns it, what type of account it is, its interest rate, its term and its size. The Reserve Bank publishes the totals a few months later.

"Household sector" is a statistical category. It covers individuals and Hindu undivided families, the businesses households run without incorporating them, and non-profit bodies that serve households, such as self-help groups and trusts. The tables on interest rate, maturity and size are published for individuals only.

The classification of owners changed with the 2018-19 return to match the international system of national accounts. The old and new household series measure related but different things, so this guide shows them apart and never adds one to the other.

Two totals appear in the RBI's tables. The ownership tables (1.x) include deposits that banks keep with other banks; the tables by type, place and term (2.x and 3.x) leave them out, so they run about ₹6 lakh crore lower. Since 2023 the RBI also runs a quarterly return, which leaves out regional rural banks. This guide never mixes the three: each chart says which table it reads.

12

How to misread these numbers

  • 1

"The average Indian has this much in the bank."

These are totals. Divided by the population they give an average that describes almost nobody: a few large accounts hold a large share, and many people hold very little.

  • 2

"Fixed deposits pay 7%, so savers are doing well."

Only after inflation and tax. A deposit earning 7% in a year of 5% inflation gains about 2% in real terms before tax, and interest is taxed at the saver's income-tax rate.

  • 3

"Households are saving less because bank deposits grew slowly."

Bank deposits are one place to save. Money moving into mutual funds, shares, insurance or gold is still saved; it simply sits outside these tables.

  • 4

"Women hold a fifth of deposits, so they own a fifth of savings."

Accounts are counted under the name of the holder, and families often open accounts in one member's name for reasons of convenience or tax. The share is a measure of accounts, not of control over money.

Sources, method and revisions

Source of record

Reserve Bank of India, Basic Statistical Return 2: deposits with scheduled commercial banks including regional rural banks, annual, as on 31 March, and the quarterly return (from March 2023, excluding regional rural banks). Every BSR-2 table DBIE publishes: ownership (reports 737 and 1200), tables 1.2 to 1.5, 2.1 to 2.12, 3.1 to 3.8 and 4.1 to 4.2, annual and quarterly, and the 2010 to 2018 district table, read from India Atlas's archived copy of DBIE. Data vintage –.

Checked against the RBI's own releases. March 2025: households held 60.2% of deposits and women 20.7%. March 2026 (release of 29 May 2026): households 59.3%, savings deposits 28.7%, term deposits 61.6%, senior citizens 20.0%, term deposits booked for one to three years 69.8%. These tables reproduce every one.

Method

Amounts are converted from rupees to ₹ lakh crore (₹ crore in the deeper tables). The all-depositor total under the new classification is the sum of its five top-level sectors, which matches the published all-India figure. DBIE exports these tables without column titles; each column is named from RBI's table layout and proved by sums that must hold in every row (current, savings and term deposits add to the total; individuals and others to all depositors; the bank groups to all banks). The rows of percentages DBIE prints under each table (with a minus sign) are left out and recomputed. District totals are sums of a district's branches by population group. Nothing is estimated.

Revisions and breaks

Two breaks are disclosed and never joined across: the change in sector classification between March 2018 and March 2019, and the finer deposit-size bands introduced in March 2026. The size chart uses the finer March 2026 bands only; the four older bands, with March 2026 summed into them, are in the data download.

This guide

Version 1.1 (October 2026), from RBI data to March 2026 (annual) and June 2026 (quarterly). v1.1 adds every BSR-2 table: owners one by one, age, states, districts, bank groups, staff, original maturity and the quarterly return. Revised each year when the RBI publishes the next return.
