Output: Index of Industrial Production

The monthly pulse of making things.

Once a month, the statisticians count what came out of India's mines, factories and power plants, not its value, its volume, and for a few days it is the most argued-about number in the economy. Then it is revised.

Industrial production growth, August 2026: the second-strongest month on the current base.

One month earlier
–
What the print says

Industrial production grew 8.0% in August 2026, up from 7.4% in July and 4.7% a year earlier. Manufacturing grew 9.0% and electricity and gas supply 12.3%, while mining shrank 5.6%, its second month of decline, against 15.8% growth a year earlier. Capital goods, the machinery that carries investment, was the standout at 16.9%, up 10.9 points on a year earlier though its growth eased from July's 19.0%; intermediate goods grew 13.7%. Consumer durables grew 11.1%, while consumer non-durables, the everyday basket, managed 2.1%.

Three others grew more slowly than a year earlier: water supply, sewerage and waste management at 6.3%, infrastructure and construction goods at 6.4%, and primary goods at 3.5%. Across the 32 industries beneath the aggregates, the range runs from electrical equipment at 30.9% to non-metallic minerals at -12.8%, with a median of 8.6%, seventeen accelerating and fifteen slowing, and eight shrinking. One month is one month, and these are first estimates: we do not know how much of mining's fall survives the revisions.

What it does not say

The general index rose 8.0% in August 2026 from a year earlier. It is one month, and a month is noise: Capital Goods ran at 16.9%, Mining & Quarrying at -5.6% against 15.8% a year earlier, and the gap between the fastest line and the slowest is 22.5 points. Four of the eleven lines moved against the headline: Water Supply at 6.3%, below its 6.9% a year ago; Infrastructure and Construction Goods at 6.4%, below 9.2%; Primary Goods at 3.5%, below 7.6%; and Mining, the weakest of the eleven.

Intermediate Goods grew 13.7%, Electricity & Gas Supply 12.3%, Consumer Durables 11.1%, Manufacturing 9.0% and Consumer Non-durables 2.1%, all quick estimates that later releases revise. And the index counts goods only: services, more than half the economy, live in a different index, while the 32 industries beneath the aggregates run from Manufacture of Electrical Equipment at 30.9% to Non-Metallic Minerals at -12.8%, with eight of them below zero. We do not know how much of this month survives revision.

The long grey line is the retired base: a decade of single-digit hum, then the cliff of April 2020 (−57%) and the mirror-image spike of April 2021 (+134%): the two wildest prints in Indian statistics, both arithmetic as much as event. The blue line is the current base, begun April 2023. Where they overlap, they disagree by a point or two. That disagreement is not an error; it is what a new basket and a new panel measure.

As of the August 2026 print

The current base has now produced 29 months of growth readings, all but one of them positive. The old base was published for the last time with the March 2026 print. Its March 2025 index, missing from the source for months, has since been loaded, so the old series closes without a gap.

The deep ledger: three retired rulers, 1982 to 2017

IIP general index, year-on-year, base 1980–81 (Apr 1982 to Mar 1998), base 1993–94 (Apr 1995 to Jun 2011), base 2004–05 (Apr 2006 to Mar 2017): side by side, never spliced

How to read this

Beneath the modern pair lie the three rulers India retired earlier: 1980–81, 1993–94 and 2004–05. Together they carry the monthly record back more than four decades: the steady eighties, the stall of 1991 when a balance-of-payments crisis choked imports of parts and fuel, the late-nineties grind, the 2003–2008 boom and the thin winter that followed. Where the lines overlap, from 1995 to 1998 and again from 2006 to 2011, they measure the same factories and disagree, sometimes by whole points. Neither is wrong; each holds a different basket.

Read these lines by the year, not the month. The item panels behind the old bases were smaller, so a single lumpy order could move an aggregate: capital goods once printed a 65 per cent year-on-year jump on one month's reading. The monthly sawtooth is arithmetic on a small panel; the slow drift underneath it is the economy.

As of the final prints

The sharpest lesson sits in February 2009. The 2004–05 base printed –: the deepest reading any of these rulers gave. The 1993–94 base read the same month at –, and in seventeen years it never once printed below zero. Same factories, one winter, two verdicts. The 1980–81 base, the oldest, touched its low of – in – and signed off in March 1998 at –; the 1993–94 base in June 2011 at –; the 2004–05 base in March 2017 at –.

How to read this

A month is noisy; a year is not. The financial-year average smooths away festivals, strikes and one-off orders, and leaves the thing a household feels over time: whether there is more steel, cement, cloth and power in the country this year than last. Each dot is one year on one ruler. Where two rulers cover the same year they usually agree on direction and differ on size, because each weighs a different basket of goods.

A year of growth near 3 per cent and a year near 9 per cent are very different worlds for a factory worker: one is a plant running a single shift, the other a plant hiring for a second.

As of 2025-26

2025-26 grew 4.3% on the current base, after 5.7% the year before; the retired 2011–12 base, in its last year, read 2025-26 at 4.1%. Output fell in 2013-14 (−0.1%, base 2004-05), 2019-20 (−0.8%, base 2011-12) and 2020-21 (−8.4%, base 2011-12). The 2013–14 fall shows only on the 2004–05 base: the 2011–12 base reads the same year as growth. Two rulers, one year, opposite signs.

How to read this

Each panel is one manufacturing industry on the retired 2011–12 base: the longest industrial memory the monthly statistics keep. The panels share one clipped scale, so a flat grey hum means a steady industry and a wide sawtooth means a lumpy one: a single large plant's shutdown can swing a two-digit industry by double digits. The lockdown spike is clipped out of every panel on purpose; it is the same arithmetic everywhere and teaches nothing about any one industry.

This grid is memory, not news. The current 2022–23 base lives in the plates above, and the two are never spliced: an industry's panel here ends where the old ledger ended.

As of the final prints

The old base signed off in March 2026 with the split it had shown for two years: – fastest at –, – slowest at –. In its last month, – of the 23 industries were moving faster than ±10%: the average never described them.

How to read this

Manufacturing is the heavyweight, most of the index, so the blue general line shadows the dark one. Mining and electricity swing wider and mean less individually. When the three point the same way, the print is broad-based; when they scatter, the headline is an average of disagreement.

As of the August 2026 print

Manufacturing (8.9%) and electricity (12.3%) carry August's print. Mining is the drag at −5.6% year on year: a sector that answers to the monsoon and to administrative clearance more than to demand.

07

The core eight

annual, base 2011–12 = 100, and two retired bases

Eight industries sit under almost everything else India makes: coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement and electricity. A new flat needs cement and steel. A farm needs fertiliser. A factory, a hospital and a phone charger need electricity, and most of that electricity still comes from coal. The Office of the Economic Adviser publishes an index of these eight every month, about a week before the IIP for the same month, which is why markets read it as an early hint of where the IIP is heading.

Together they carry about two-fifths of the IIP's weight on the 2011–12 base (40.27 of 100), so a bad month for coal or power drags the whole index. What follows is the RBI's annual record of that index: financial-year averages and their growth, on three bases that are never joined.

Steel and cement carried the core in 2025-26; crude oil and natural gas shrank

How to read this

Read the bars with their weights. Refinery products weigh 11.29 in the IIP, cement 2.16: a one-point slip in refining moves the index five times as much as the same slip in cement. Steel and cement rise together when India builds roads, railways and houses; crude oil and natural gas have fallen for most of the last decade because the old fields are ageing, which is why the country imports most of its oil.

As of 2025-26

The composite grew 2.7% in 2025-26. Three of the eight grew and five shrank: steel 9.5%, cement 8.7% and electricity 1.0% against refinery products −0.1%, fertilisers −0.1%, coal −0.5%, crude oil −2.8% and natural gas −2.8%. The building materials did the work; the fuels did not.

Composite index of the eight core industries, growth of the financial-year average, per cent, bases 1993–94 (1995–96 to 2010–11), 2004–05 (2005–06 to 2013–14) and 2011–12 (2013–14 to 2025-26), side by side, never spliced; the IIP general index (base 2011–12) for comparison

How to read this

The core index and the IIP move together because the core is two-fifths of the IIP, but the core swings less: power and fuel are bought every day, in good years and bad, while cars and machines can wait. When the IIP falls harder than the core, households and firms are postponing purchases, not switching off the lights.

As of 2025-26

On every ruler, the core grew in every financial year but one: 2020–21, the lockdown year, when the composite fell – and the IIP –. Where the 1993–94 and 2004–05 rulers overlap, from 2005–06 to 2010–11, they disagree by as much as – in a single year.

08

What this measures

The IIP counts physical output: tonnes of coal, metres of cloth, kilowatt-hours, scooters rolling off lines. Not revenue, not profit, not value added: volume. When we say industry grew 7.3 per cent, we mean the index of physical production stands 7.3 per cent above the same month a year ago.

It is built from a fixed panel of representative items, each standing in for a slice of its industry, weighted together on a 2022–23 frame. It arrives fast, quick estimates within weeks, and the price of speed is revision: late data from factories trickles in for two months, and the first print is a draft.

It is the oldest high-frequency read on the real economy India has, which is why everyone over-reads it. The honest use is narrow: direction and breadth, in three-month moving windows, never point estimates.

Same index, different sorting: by what the output is for. Capital goods track the investment cycle: factories buying machines. Consumer durables track the confident household; non-durables, the everyday one. When capital runs ahead of consumer for a year, the expansion is investment-led, and the question becomes when the consumer joins.

As of the August 2026 print

Capital goods at – against consumer non-durables at –: capital goods have grown faster for 22 months running. The consumption line swings from month to month, so read the gap over several prints, not any one of them.

The aggregate hides a split economy. In the same twelve months one industry can grow by a fifth while another shrinks, and the headline describes neither. The four lines are picked by the data each month: the two fastest and the two slowest over the last year. A single month moves them around; the twelve-month average is what earns a line its place.

Over the last twelve months – grew fastest, averaging – a month on a year earlier, followed by –; – and – were the slowest, the last averaging –. In August the four read –, –, – and –.

The top three are electrical equipment, other transport equipment and motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers; the bottom three wearing apparel, tobacco products and non-metallic minerals incl. minor minerals. How to read this

The IIP counts goods. Services, more than half of everything India produces, had no monthly output measure at all: between one GDP quarter and the next, the largest part of the economy was statistically dark. The Index of Services Production is the answer, built like the IIP but counting bank transactions, freight, retail sales and the rest.

Read positions, not slopes. Each line is a level against its 2024–25 average: above 100 is above the base year, and that is all. The sawtooth is unmodelled seasonality: this index is too young for anyone to know what a normal October or a normal March looks like, so a month-to-month jump is not information yet. We do not know its seasonal shape. Nobody does; the history required to learn it does not exist.

As of the July 2026 print

Retail trade stood at – in July 2026: – above July 2025, comparing like month with like, the only comparison the young series supports. Banking read –. Beyond that the honest commentary runs out fast: insurance printed – in March and – in July. Year-end accounting, seasonality, or noise: we do not know, because no earlier March exists to compare.

11

How to misread this number

  • i.

"Industry grew 7%, so the economy grew 7%."

Industry is under a third of GDP, and this index covers only its organised, goods-producing slice. Services, the larger half of the economy, are elsewhere entirely. The IIP is a pulse, not the patient.

  • ii.

"One strong month is a boom."

This is the most volatile major series in Indian statistics. A festival calendar shift can move a print by two points; a single large factory's shutdown can move an industry. Three-month averages are the minimum unit of belief.

  • iii.

"The first print is the number."

Quick estimates are revised as late returns arrive, and the revisions are not noise around zero: they cluster. Citing the first print of two years ago against the final print of last year mixes vintages.

  • iv.

    "Growth recovered, so output recovered."

Every growth rate is a ratio to a year ago. In April 2021 the index printed +134%: and output was still below its pre-pandemic level. The spike measured the hole in the denominator, not the height of the economy.

  • v.

"The two bases tell different stories, so one is wrong."

The 2011–12 and 2022–23 series use different items, different factories, different weights. Where they overlap they routinely disagree by a point. That is what changing the ruler does. Compare within a base, never across the seam.

  • vi.

"The core index fell, so the IIP will fall."

The eight core industries are about two-fifths of the IIP. The other three-fifths, from medicines to motorcycles, can move the other way, and often do. The core is an early hint, not a forecast.

  • vii.

"A young index can be read like an old one."

A new index, the ISP is one, has no seasonal history: nobody knows what its normal festival month or year-end looks like, because none has happened twice. Until the same month has recurred for years, it supports statements about levels, not about momentum. Where the seasonal shape is unknown, the honest reading is "we do not know".

Sources, method and revisions

Source of record

Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, National Statistical Office. "Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production: August 2026" (base 2022-23=100). Index levels retrieved via the eSankhyiki API, vintage –; growth rates are computed from levels and track the published rates within 0.05 pt.

The discontinued base 2011-12=100, including the 23-industry register in §05, is shown separately and never spliced with the current base (the base-year rule). Its March 2025 index, missing from the source for months, was later loaded, so the series closes without a gap.

The heritage bases 1993-94=100 (Apr 1994 to Jun 2011) and 2004-05=100 (Apr 2005 to Mar 2017), the deep ledger in §03, come from the same API, each on its own ruler. The API serves four bases, monthly and annual, by sector, use and two-digit industry, and nothing finer; every one of those cuts is in the downloads, the annual rows as published (levels and growth) since October 2026.

The oldest ruler, 1980-81=100 (Apr 1981 to Mar 1998; manufacturing groups to Mar 1994), is not served by MoSPI's API. It comes from the CSO's index as republished by the Reserve Bank of India in its database (DBIE reports 638 and 219), read through the Atlas's local mirror of DBIE. Every other base in those RBI tables is a copy of MoSPI's series and is not used.

The eight core industries come from the Office of the Economic Adviser, DPIIT, as published annually by the RBI (DBIE reports 499 and 989) on bases 1993-94, 2004-05 and 2011-12. The RBI's growth figure for the first year of the 1993-94 base is measured against the 1980-81 base and is left out. The monthly core index is not in the RBI database and is not yet carried here.

The Index of Services Production (base 2024-25=100, first published 2025) is a trial series: MoSPI may change its methodology without notice, and every vintage is provisional. It is shown as levels only, same vintage.

Revisions & uncertainty

Quick estimates are revised over the following two months as late returns arrive, and again in subsequent annual revisions. Every vintage is archived; none is overwritten silently.

Where something is not measured, this guide says "we do not know" rather than inventing a number.

Output, version 1.4 (October 2026), adds the financial-year series of every base, the 1980-81 base and the eight core industries. Earlier: the water supply & waste sector and the full 19-service ISP grid.
